What counts as a good engagement rate?

Engagement rate falls as an account grows — a nano-creator with a tight community will always out-engage a mega-account in percentage terms. Compare against your own tier, not the biggest names in your niche.

Nanounder 5K5 – 8%
Micro5K – 50K2.5 – 5%

How engagement rate is actually calculated

The most common formula divides interactions by audience size: (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. Averaging over the last several posts smooths out one viral hit or one quiet day, so the number reflects a profile’s real pull rather than a single moment.

Some tools use reach instead of followers as the denominator, which produces a higher figure — that is why the same profile can score differently across calculators. ERGauge uses the follower-based formula because follower counts are public and comparable across accounts, and it computes the average automatically when you open a profile in the viewer.
